Help Shape the Future of Myalup and Binningup: Share Your Ideas for Legacy Projects!

In 2009, the Water Corporation and the Shire joined forces to establish a Community Benefits Package, aimed at supporting communities impacted by the construction of the Southern Seawater Desalination Plant. A key part of this initiative was the creation of the Coastal Communities Reserve Account, dedicated to funding meaningful community development and infrastructure projects in and around Myalup and Binningup. These funds have always been reserved exclusively for new projects, not routine maintenance or operational costs.

Initially, the Community Benefits Package provided a one-time payment of $1 million (plus GST). During the plant’s construction, the Shire secured an additional $750,000 for soil disposal at the Richardson Road Landfill site. This brought the total funding in the Coastal Communities Fund to $1.75 million, with further interest accrued over time.

Over the past 14 years, this funding has enabled 38 community projects, with $1,122,094 allocated to initiatives led by groups such as the Binningup Christian Youth, Myalup Community Association, Lions Club of Binningup, Binningup Country Club, and Binningup Bowling Club.

Now, as the agreement’s purpose has been fulfilled, the Water Corporation has requested the Shire to use the remaining funds. Here’s the plan:

  • 60% of the remaining funds will be held in trust and integrated into the Shire's annual grants program, allowing local groups to apply for project funding.
  • The remaining $400,000+ will be invested in significant legacy projects that will leave a lasting impact on the community.

We Need Your Input!

The Shire is launching a community engagement process to identify impactful legacy projects for the Myalup and Binningup area. We want to hear your ideas! What projects do you believe will provide lasting benefits to the community? Proposed projects should deliver significant value and fit within a budget of $100,000 to $400,000.

Your ideas could shape the future of our coastal communities—let’s make it happen together!

Two Possible Legacy Projects

Through consultation to date, the Shire has identified two potential legacy projects: the Binningup Skatepark and the Myalup Walking Trails.

  • Binningup Skatepark
The Binningup Skatepark aims to be a vibrant gathering space that fosters creativity, physical activity, and social connections. In a town with limited activities for young people, it will fill a crucial gap by providing a safe and inclusive space for skating and scootering. It will give young people the opportunity to stay active, develop new skills, and build confidence while socialising with peers. Beyond benefiting youth, the skatepark will enhance Binningup’s overall aesthetics, transforming underutilised space into a visually appealing community asset and a focal point for residents and visitors alike.

  • Myalup Walking Trails
The Myalup Walking Trails project offers a chance to celebrate the area’s natural beauty while creating new recreational opportunities for locals and visitors. Winding through Myalup’s stunning landscapes, the trails will promote outdoor activity and provide a serene space for walking, jogging, and nature appreciation. For the local community, the trails will enhance livability by encouraging a healthy lifestyle and fostering stronger community connections. For visitors, the trails will position Myalup as a sought-after tourism destination, supporting local businesses and boosting the area’s appeal as a place of natural beauty and tranquility.
